In 2017, Italy's trade surplus fell to EUR 47 billion from a record high of EUR 50 billion in the previous year, as imports jumped 9 percent to EUR 401 billion, the highest level since 2011, and exports rose at a softer 7 percent to an all-time high of EUR 448 billion. And it has been more successful than some of its euro neighbours in transforming a recurring current deficit into a surplus. Seven years ago, Italy and France had current deficits of €45-50bn and Spain a current deficit of €35bn. Last year, France had a current deficit of almost €70bn.

Italy's government budget deficit narrowed to 1.6 percent of GDP in 2019, the lowest since 2007, around half the EU's 3 percent ceiling and below the government's target of 2.2 percent. For 2020, the official target is a deficit of 2.2 percent of GDP, but a sharper increase is now expected as Italian authorities boost spending to support the economy following the coronavirus outbreak.
